The house

Two floors, both opening onto the garden

Upstairs, three bedrooms and a living room with sofas, armchairs and TV. Downstairs, the katoi — the old ground-floor sitting room of a Cycladic house — leads to the arched dining room, the kitchen with its double marble sink and gas and electric cookers, and out into the garden.

The garden

A vineyard, fig trees and a hammock in the shade

The lower level is a private vineyard — in season, pick your own grapes for dinner — with five fig trees alongside. The upper level is full of seasonal flowers and herbs for your salad or your mojito. At the far end, almond and olive trees shade a hammock and a quiet place to read.

Outdoors

Four terraces to follow the sun

Breakfast on the veranda with the view, lunch in the shade of the oleander, dinner outside in the evening. Each terrace catches a different time of day.

Getting there

Ano Petali, between Artemonas and Apollonia

The house sits in Ano Petali, a traditional Cycladic village between Artemonas and Apollonia. Now and then a donkey’s call or a distant chapel bell breaks the silence.

There is no car access to the house itself — the last stretch is on foot, up traditional Sifnian steps.

Car or taxi
Park at the car park just above the Petali Village hotel. From there: about 3 minutes, 50 steps and 150 m.
Bus
Get off at the Yiofyri stop. From there: about 5 minutes, 140 steps and 150 m.
